When Love Comes Knocking Again.
‘When love comes knocking again, I hope it stays’
I told someone this a long time ago and they responded with;
‘When love comes knocking again, water it and see it bloom’
I’ve clung to those words ever since, much like a man sticks to his favorite barber. And I have also realized that genuine love makes watering easy. You don’t struggle to nourish it. Or maybe you do struggle a bit, but it’s a struggle you’re happy to face. A good struggle. Just as plants need daily watering, you’re glad to nurture your love every day. As they say, it’s the fire you fuel that keeps burning. No fuel, no fire. So, you keep fueling, and you see the flames grow. More flames. Much more. Eventually, you’re ecstatic because everything starts to make sense.
Until…
One day, out of the blue, life hits, and the fuel that once fueled the fire now seems to quench it. It’s like watering a plant that, despite watering it, withers and dies. Your fuel becomes water to the fire, and your water turns into a herbicide for the plant.
You fueled the fire? Yes. But it dies down. You watered the plant? Yes. But it withers.
This experience shakes you to your core. I’ve shared all this to say that sometimes, despite giving your best, things don’t turn out as hoped. Sometimes they do. You pour in so much, and yet the results don’t reflect your efforts. You were full of hope at first, and then it fades — slowly at first, then suddenly, all at once, bam! Because of this, you become discouraged from watering again.
I write this reflecting on the things and people I’ve invested in that didn’t work out. The plants that died in my hands, despite watering. The fire that extinguished before my eyes, despite fueling.
But will I stop watering? No! I’m learning to accept that some things won’t work out the way you planned, despite your efforts. But you must keep trying.
Many plants will be watered. Some will bloom into beautiful flowers or even giant trees. Others will die before realizing their potential beauty. If you decide to stop watering, you might miss out on the potential beauty that could come from nurturing a plant. It’s true that certain experiences break you, but giving in to those experiences means you’re giving up on the many beautiful moments still possible in your life. Broken crayons can still create beautiful art when an artist makes something extraordinary from them.
So, give life your best again. Give people your best again. Give love your best again. You deserve the beauty that life can offer anew.
I’d leave you with this:
“When love comes knocking again, water it and see it bloom.”
Again and again!
I’m rooting for you, my friend!
